KUCHING, April 9: The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) is keen to learn from Sarawak’s experience while working together to shape broader national policies, particularly on carbon tax and carbon credit frameworks at the federal level.
Felda chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the matter was among key discussions during a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.
Ahmad Shabery noted that Sarawak is widely regarded as being at the forefront of formulating policies and programmes related to the green economy, particularly in the adoption of renewable energy such as solar and hydropower.
“Sarawak is highly advanced in developing policies and programmes related to the green economy, including a strong grasp of renewable energy utilisation such as solar and hydro.
“It also encompasses initiatives in recycling and the circular economy across various industries, especially those linked to the plantation sector,” he told a press conference after the meeting.
He added that Felda, as an agency responsible for land development and plantations, is exploring opportunities to deepen collaboration with the Sarawak government in advancing the green economy.
He highlighted that Sarawak has made significant contributions to environmental sustainability practices, positioning the state as a potential model for others across Malaysia.
“For instance, the federal government is set to introduce environmental legislation involving a carbon tax that must be balanced with carbon credits. Sarawak is already very progressive in advancing such initiatives,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Shabery disclosed that Felda currently operates four plantations in Sarawak, including in Sampadi and Samarahan, as well as the Asian Plantations Ltd (APL) estate.
He said this underscores Felda’s continued commitment to strengthening the agriculture and plantation sectors in the State, while opening the door for wider collaboration with the Sarawak government in driving green economic growth and sustainable resource management.
