KUCHING, Jan 20: The Federal government has approved an RM30 million allocation for the expansion of Ulu Sungai Merah Road in Sibu.

Assistant Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang confirmed this after a meeting with Land and Survey Department Sibu Superintendent Mohamad Muazziz Othman today.

“The project would be implemented under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), and work is expected to commence next year.

“This would help to solve the traffic congestion problem in the area,” he said in a statement today.

Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, however added that the department is appealing to the government to increase the budget to RM38 million as the current approved allocation is “insufficient”.

“The whole length of the project is 2.17km spanning from the traffic light junction to the junction of Ulu Sungai Merah Lane 46.

“At the moment, the project is at the design stage, and hopefully, the work will commence in 2023,” he said. — DayakDaily
