KUCHING, Jan 9: An immediate study will be held by the Ministry of Education (MoE) on the need to bring back the UPSR and PT3 examinations for primary and lower secondary school students, respectively.

According to Free Malaysia Today, MoE minister Fadhlina Sidek said that the national education advisory council had been ordered to conduct the review, acknowledging the contention caused by the move to scrap the exams.

She added that a decision will be made once the council completes the study and submits its findings and recommendations.

In 2021, UPSR was abolished, while PT3 was cancelled, which was later officially abolished in 2022. UPSR is taken by Primary 6 students, while Form 3 students sat for PT3.

This was followed by repeated calls for the examinations to be reinstated. However, Fadhlina maintained that the government would not reverse its decision to abolish them.

Instead, she said the government would focus on strengthening the existing final assessment system to help reduce stress among students.

In October, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said overall Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results had remained stable despite the abolition of UPSR and PT3. — DayakDaily
