KUCHING, Aug 2: The federal government is currently undertaking a structured evaluation to explore the role of nuclear energy as one of the options for a clean, stable, and competitive electricity source in the country’s future energy mix following the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

In a statement, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said this initiative considers the need to diversify energy sources, strengthen long-term energy security, support carbon emission reduction targets, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, in line with the country’s climate change commitments and the growing energy demand.

It said that the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation (NEPIO), MyPOWER Corporation, has been entrusted with coordinating preparatory efforts based on the guidelines recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“This preparatory phase is being implemented through a well-organised framework, coordinated by a technical committee mechanism across ministries, departments, and agencies, to ensure a comprehensive and integrated national approach.

“Implementation will follow the IAEA Milestone Approach, covering aspects such as national positioning, legal and regulatory frameworks, stakeholder engagement, and human resource development,” it said.

The ministry also clarified that at this stage, no decision has been made regarding the implementation, technology type, or nuclear reactor capacity to be developed.

“The government’s current priority is to ensure that any future considerations are based on comprehensive technical analyses, aligned with national development priorities, and compliant with international obligations.

“This is also in line with the Malaysia MADANI aspiration, which prioritises long-term, knowledge-based planning, sustainable resource management, and the well-being of the people and future generations.” — DayakDaily
