KUCHING, Dec 10: A total of 1,700 families from various backgrounds in the state have benefited from the Department of Women and Family Sarawak (JWKS) Ziarah programme, said Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

According to Fatimah, the contributions were also channeled through the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuching Archbishop Simon Poh, and the Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP) to be distributed to the needy.

“This effort was carried out by the Sarawak Women and Family Council member Raja Noor Raja Akmar, together with the non-government organisation (NGO).

“For today, we added the value to the contribution given by Raja Noor and her friends, and a selected 25 family in need from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Flat, received a contribution of necessity goods and clothing from the JWKS,” Fatimah told reporters after contribution presentation ceremony held at MBKS flat, Jalan Ban Hock, today.

The JWKS Ziarah Keluarga program contributions were also given to another 75 families in three other places in Kuching, namely in Kampung Selipar Putus, Kampung Kudei, and Sri Wangi Flat.

At the same time, Fatimah noted, through the JWKS Ziarah Keluarga program, they also have identified some of the children, from needy families, who are disabled and need assistance.

“I have recommended that their child be brought to the One-Stop Early Intervention Centre (OSEIC) for proper diagnosis and intervention. I also advised their parents or caretaker to make sure that they do not stop going to school, and regardless of how hard it is, we will try to help them,” she added.

Fatimah also revealed that a Social Welfare Department (JKM) counter will be opened up to assist the residents in need in MBKS flat.

“But it does not mean that everybody will get the assistance, as we prioritise on those who are really in need, and we will be working together with MBKS on this,” she said. –DayakDaily.
