Fatal hit-and-run in Miri: Police looking for witnesses, victim’s family

KUCHING, Nov 2: Miri police are seeking witnesses to a hit-and-run incident which resulted in the death of a man at Jalan Kuala Baram Batu Satu, Kuala Baram Bypass, on Saturday night (Nov 1).

According to a statement, Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said that a report was received at around 11.32pm.

He added that police were not able to identify the victim, who seemed to be between his 40s and 50s.

“Preliminary investigations at the scene found that the victim was walking along the road when he was hit from behind by an unidentified vehicle. As a result of the collision, the victim was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Miri General Hospital on Nov 2, at around 2.30am,” he said.

Based on eyewitnesses’ accounts, the victim was last seen earlier the same day walking back and forth along the left shoulder of the road, not far from the site.

Police urge anyone with information on the incident to contact the Traffic Investigation Officer Inspector. Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan at 018-9529957 / 085-433400, or report to the nearest police station.

In addition, police are also attempting to locate the victim’s family. The victim was found wearing a colourful striped t-shirt, dark jeans, and sports shoes

Any members of the public who have lost a family member matching the description are requested to contact the investigating officer.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
