KUCHING, Nov 2: The families of two Sarawak Arts Council (MSS) employees who passed away in October will each receive RM5,000 in insurance benefits to help cover funeral expenses, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The caretaker Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak said the families of the late Mohamad Arawi Mat Nor, 45, and Sulaiman Tuah, 54, would each receive the payout under the Group Hospital and Surgical (GHS) Insurance scheme.

He disclosed this during a press conference on the Borneo Indigenous Festival at the Mulu Room, Baitulmakmur II Building, today.

The late Mohamad Arawi passed away on Oct 27, while Sulaiman died on Oct 11.

Abdul Karim said he had also personally contributed RM500 to each family as a gesture of condolence, while MSS staff had collectively extended additional contributions to support the bereaved families.

In addition, MSS had arranged for the payment of RM1,416.98 in outstanding emoluments to the family of the late Sulaiman, covering his service from Oct 1 to 10, subject to the applicable financial procedures and regulations.

Both deceased had served in the public sector since Jan 3, 2011, initially under the cultural development unit of the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Department before continuing their service with MSS.

Abdul Karim said the assistance reflected the importance of looking after employees and their families, particularly during difficult times.

He added that the contributions were a gesture of appreciation for the deceased’s service and contributions to the organisation and the development of Sarawak’s arts and culture. — DayakDaily
