KUCHING, July 30: Face masks have been distributed and a health task force activated at Mukah Polytechnic as haze from nearby open burning affects air quality and causes breathing issues among students during orientation week.

“Some students complained of shortness of breath. In several cases, medical assistants (MAs) attended to them and successfully addressed the issue.

“For minor cases, we manage them internally, but if symptoms are serious, the students are immediately sent to the hospital.

“We have a driver on standby 24 hours a day, and wardens are on duty from morning until night,” said Ahmad Nabil Mohamad, Head of the Corporate Communication Unit, in a recording shared with DayakDaily today.

Thick haze blankets a road near Mukah Polytechnic, reducing visibility due to nearby open burning.

He added that the health task force will be on standby throughout orientation week and present at every event to monitor student well-being.

“Because of the hazy weather and the open burning near the polytechnic, we have started distributing face masks to students,” he said.

Ahmad Nabil also highlighted that 775 new students are currently on campus. — DayakDaily
