KUCHING, March 15: Malaysians will get an additional public holiday for Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year, depending on which day the festive occasion falls.

Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim said according to tradition, Hari Raya would fall either on a Friday (March 20) or Saturday (March 21), and the exact date would only be confirmed after the moon is sighted and officially announced on Friday night.

“But whatever the day, Friday or Saturday, don’t worry — we will provide an additional public holiday for Hari Raya,” he said when speaking at the National Consumer Day 2026 in Sabah today. The report is based on a livestream of his speech on Berita RTM’s Facebook page.

Anwar further said the move recognises the additional time, dedication and effort many put in during the fasting month.

“If Hari Raya falls on Friday, March 20, the additional holiday will be on Monday, March 23. If it falls on Saturday, March 21, the extra holiday will be on Friday, March 20,” he explained.

He also noted the early announcement allows Malaysians to plan ahead. — DayakDaily
