Express boat services between Kuching to Tg Manis, Sarikei and Sibu temporarily halted

An express boat lies idle at the Sibu express boat terminal. Express boat operators have temporarily ceased operations as Covid-19 continues to wreck havoc on the industry.

SIBU, Nov 4: Express boat service providers operating on routes between Kuching to Tanjung Manis, Sarikei and Sibu have temporarily ceased operations.

This comes after Kuching was declared a Covid-19 red zone following a resurgence in cases.

A spokesman from the Sarawak Rivers Board, said today that the service is stopped effective today until further notice.

“We will announce the commencement of the service in time to come when the Covid situation improves,” he said.

Meanwhile Sarawak Bus Transport Companies Association advisor Lau Khing Seng when contacted said some bus companies already terminated their Sibu-Kuching-Sibu services two months ago due to low passenger volume.

“The disease has seriously impacted the bus companies that it rendered them unable to continue with the sector. There were only between two to four passengers who paid RM60 for the one-way fare. No bus companies can survive under this situation,” he emphasised.

Lau revealed that the two or three bus companies still operating the route are also contemplating discontinuing the service as they do not want to incur more losses. — DayakDaily
