KUCHING, July 11: A species of wild orchids whose yellow flowers bear a striking resemblance to fireworks have been discovered at Sama Jaya Nature Reserve.
These miniature-sized orchids, known as Bulbophyllum vaginatum in scientific terms, thrive in warm to hot climates as unifoliate epiphytes, according to the Internet Orchid Species Encyclopedia (IOSPE).
They feature yellow, ovoid pseudobulbs arranged at intervals, each carrying a single, apical, oblong leaf with a convex, coriaceous texture and bilobed tip.
The orchids bloom twice a year, once in late winter and again in summer or fall, producing a slender 12cm long inflorescence adorned with four sheaths and a cluster of 12 to 15 filamenty white flowers that mimic the beauty of fireworks.
Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) expressed its awe and delight at this captivating addition to the nature reserve’s diverse flora.
“This orchid is native to Thailand, Malaysia, Java, and Borneo, where it can be found in various environments such as mangrove forests, lowland areas, open secondary forests, mixed forests, and peat swamp forests.
“Its presence can be observed at elevations ranging from sea-level to 600 metres,” SFC said in a post shared on its social media today.
SFC warmly welcomes the public to seize this unique opportunity to witness the splendor of these exquisite wild orchids.
Visitors are encouraged to embark on an enchanting nature walk amidst the lush greenery and explore the breathtaking biodiversity that the reserve offers.
However, it is of utmost importance that visitors show respect for the environment, follow designated trails, and avoid disturbing the delicate ecosystems within the reserve.
Visitors are kindly reminded to cherish and preserve the natural wonders that grace Sama Jaya Nature Reserve. — DayakDaily
