Experience Teochow tradition, culinary delights, opera at Hiang Tiang Sing Ti deity’s birthday on April 10-11

Teochew clan members seeking blessings to hold the birthday ceremony at the Hiang Tiang Siang Ti Temple on Carpenter Street.

KUCHING, March 16: The celebration of Hiang Tiang Siang Ti deity’s birthday over two days on April 10 and 11 will showcase Teochew traditional delicacies like oyster pancake and renowned aromatic pastries, accompanied by opera performances as well as prayer ceremonies at the temple and Lau Ya Keng food court on Carpenter Street.

According to a press release, the Kuching Teochew Association would also present a temple fair showcasing a plethora of Teochew delicacies and engaging programmes for the public to enjoy.

Reputable Teochew restaurants in Kuching will participate in the fair and offer a delectable culinary experience.


On April 10, a grand birthday celebration for senior citizens born in 1954 or earlier, whose birth months fall between January and April, and who are aged 70 and above, will be hosted.

They will be treated to a sumptuous dinner at Lau Ya Keng, accompanied by enchanting Teochew opera performances.

Senior members aged 70 and above, born between January and April, are encouraged to register for the event by contacting the Association’s office at 082-242457 during office hours.

Registration will close on March 31, 2024.

For those born between May and August, as well as from September to December, a separate mass birthday celebration will be announced at a later date.

Themed ‘Always be grateful for our 160 years, sustaining our Teochew clanship’, this celebration aims to honour the contributions of senior members while promoting the traditional Chinese virtue of celebrating birthdays as a gesture of filial piety towards the elderly.

This event also seeks to introduce and preserve the rich culinary and cultural heritage of earlier generations of the Teochew people, while fostering camaraderie among clan members. — DayakDaily
