KUCHING, Dec 18: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has highlighted the State’s elevated road approach as a long-term solution for constructing roads on peat soil, noting its effectiveness and cost-efficiency over time.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad’s (Cahya Mata) Clinker Line 2 project, Abang Johari said traditional road construction methods, such as geotextiles, had proven ineffective in areas like Samarahan, where roads continued to develop undulations on peat soil.
“Using geotextiles is not really effective because the road remains wavy due to peat soil.
“Thus, I have directed the Public Works Department (JKR) to adopt a new technology for constructing roads on peat—elevated roads supported by pillars. Though initially more expensive, maintenance costs are lower in the long term,” he said.
He added that key areas slated for this approach include Sebuyau to Gedong in Samarahan, as well as parts of Limbang, Lawas and Baram.
At the same time, Abang Johari noted that the elevated roads will preserve sensitive ecosystems such as peatlands and mangroves, which store carbon and offer potential for carbon trading.
“The soil, particularly mangrove and peat soil, is not disturbed. In return, it stores carbon, allowing us to be involved in carbon trading,” he added. – DayakDaily
