MIRI, March 26: There will be a grand celebration for Baram Regatta this year following its hiatus since 2017, says Marudi assemblyman Datu Dr Penguang Manggil.

He said the annual Baram Regatta is scheduled to run from Aug 24 to 27 and the organising committee just had its first meeting on planned events.

The highlight other than the regatta race, he revealed, would be the selection of beauty queens in traditional attire such as cheongsam, kebaya, ngepan Iban and traditional Orang Ulu attire every night.

“This time, I think we may do a grand one because we haven’t been having it since 2017 because of Covid-19 and the construction (of the waterfront),” he told DayakDaily when met at the Marudi square on Saturday (March 25).

Penguang also said that the main stage for this year’s regatta event is designed to have two sides for audiences on the river and onshore.

For the record, Marudi was where the first recorded regatta in Sarawak’s history was held and is thus considered the mother of all regattas in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
