KUCHING, Dec 3: The completion of the new Booster Station and ongoing construction of High-Level Water Tank projects in Bekenu will ensure sufficient water supply for residents.

According to a report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the project is an effort by the Sarawak government to ensure that the people in Subis district can enjoy better and continuous basic facilities of clean water supply as well as improve the infrastructure and water supply system in the area.

“To date, the booster pump station construction project has been fully completed and is expected to benefit 19 villages, two longhouses, a school and an immigration detention depot with a production capacity of 1.2 million litres per day.

“At the same time, the Tiris High-Level Water Tank construction project with a storage capacity of two million litres is still under construction with 62.2 per cent progress, and it is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2022,” said Awang Tengah in his speech when launching the Subis Jenggalas Booster Pump Station in Miri on Tuesday.

He explained the booster pump station would supply clean water more consistently and reduce the water shortage problem in the event of accidental pipe leakages.

“This system can also accommodate future development in the area, while the Tiris High-Level Tank with a capacity of two million litres will provide sufficient water reservoirs for the needs of the coastal areas, which is from Kampung Gayu Kapor to Kampung Kuala Sibuti,” he added.

The Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) as the implementing agencies have completed the New Bekenu Booster Station, while the High-Level Water Tank in Tiris for Water Supply to Kampung Siwak Terahad, Immigration Depot and Kuala Sibuti in Bekenu is still under construction with RM14 million cost for both projects.

Also present during the ceremony were Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Assistant Minister Datuk Rosey Yunus, Miri Resident Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf, Lambir incumbent Dr Ripin Lamat, and Miri Division Land and Survey Department superintendent Anthony Aboi. — DayakDaily
