KUCHING, Jan 6: Four cases of school item price hikes have been uncovered in Sarawak following a combination of enforcement inspections and reports from the public, authorities said.
According to TVS, Sarawak Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) director Matthew Dominic Barin said the cases were identified during Ops Kesan 5.0 Back to School, which began today. Notices have been issued to the traders concerned under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 for further investigation.
“These cases were uncovered through enforcement checks and public tips. Investigations are ongoing, and we are ensuring compliance across the State,” he said during a walkabout and price-monitoring exercise held here today as part of the Program Jualan Rahmah Madani (PJRM) Back to School.
Matthew stressed that Ops Kesan 5.0 aims to curb unreasonable price hikes ahead of the new school term and will continue until the Back to School period concludes.
Traders found guilty may face fines of up to RM500,000, while individuals could be fined up to RM100,000. The public is also urged to report any suspicious pricing practices to KPDN via branches, WhatsApp, or the ministry’s official portal.
The initiative runs alongside PJRM Back to School, which started on December 1, 2025 and continues until January 11, 2026, helping parents purchase school supplies at reasonable prices. — DayakDaily
