KUCHING, Aug 8: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Hulu Rajang branch has backed the proposal from the local community requesting for Belaga district to be elevated into a division.

Its branch chairman Abun Sui Anyit said if Belaga is elevated into another division in the state, then Belaga district and Sungai Asap districts will be included in the proposed division, while Murum and Ulu Balui will be turned into sub-districts.

“There is a suggestion that Tubau sub-district should also be included into Belaga division as requested by the local community in Belaga, and for this, PKR Hulu Rajang branch fully supported the proposal and request,” he said in a press statement today.

Abun said PKR Hulu Rajang was of the opinion that Tubau sub-district should be absorbed into the proposed Belaga division, because voters in N.66 Murum, has already been included in Murum constituency since the 2016 state election.

He said this would help to make things easier and more organised for the voters from Murum constituency and Hulu Rajang parliamentary constituency, since Tubau is still under the Bintulu division.

“For those in Kampung Long Busang and other villages in Ulu Balui area, the villagers there still want to remain under Belaga district. However, the decision is in the hands of those involved in Ulu Balui and Tubau, and for this, PKR Hulu Rajang branch suggests that a public meeting should be organised to get the public feedback, especially those involved.

“We are confident that with the attractions that Belaga offers when becoming a divison, it will attract the surrounding areas such as from Ulu Balui and Tubau to join Belaga division,” he added.

At the same time, Abun calls for the government to realise the request from the local Belaga populace before the term of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly expires in June 2021.

He said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg was aware of the request because he was informed about it during his visit to Sungai Asap town in February, this year.

“If the request cannot be implemented by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government now, then PKR Hulu Rajang branch will continue to fight for this even after the next election.

“Granted that Pakatan Harapan (PH) will govern Sarawak and take over Murun and Belaga constituencies in the coming state election, Belaga division will be the main agenda for our  fight until it is realised, as requested by the locals in both Belaga and Murum,” he said. –DayakDaily.
