BETONG, Jan 25: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has emphasized the need for electricity supply to be upgraded in rural areas, especially in view of the residents’ evolving lifestyles.

With that, he has instructed Sarawak Energy Bhd (Sarawak Energy) to upgrade the existing electrical circuits to reach a capacity of 500 kilovolts (kV) to ensure adequate and reliable power supply in rural areas.

“From the Northern Zone, Central Zone, and now Betong Zone, they have all requested three-phase circuits, because the single-phase circuit can no longer meet the needs of the residents in rural areas as their conditions and economy have improved.

“Our resolution to solve this problem is that I have instructed Sarawak Energy to upgrade its circuit phase, to accommodate electricity from 275kV to 500kV in order to provide sufficient electricity supply,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Betong Zone Delegates Meeting today.

Abang Johari, who is also head of PBB, stated that the transition from a single-phase circuit to a three-phase circuit is also necessary to channel electricity from the floating solar in Batang Ai to distribution to each household in the rural areas.

He noted that the electricity generated from this floating farm, which is the largest in Malaysia, requires larger cables as it generates more power.

Also present at the conference were PBB deputy presidents of Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, PBB permanent chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, PBB secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, PBB vice presidents Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi and Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, PBB head of the Women’s Movement Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, and other distinguished guests. – DayakDaily
