Elderly man with dementia found safe by plantation worker after wandering away from longhouse in Roban

SARATOK, March 12: A 78-year-old with dementia, who had wandered away from his longhouse in Rumah Inggam in Sungai Nyiar, Roban, has been found safe by a plantation worker.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak responded to the emergency call at 10.14am and swiftly mobilised a search and rescue (SAR) team from the Saratok Station to the site today.

Despite efforts by family members to locate the missing elderly man, they were unable to do so and thus sought assistance from the authorities.


Upon arrival at the scene and after receiving a briefing alongside other agencies, rescuers initiated the search at 10.42am, covering a radius of one kilometre from the point where he was last seen near the main road of the longhouse.

At 2pm, the search operation extended to a five kilometre-radius along the main road leading to the longhouse.

Later, the command centre received information that a plantation worker had discovered the missing man in good health within the plantation area, approximately 1.3 kilometres away from the command centre at 4.45pm.

The rescue team promptly proceeded to the location, retrieved the elderly gentleman, and reunited him with his family.

Additionally, he received medical evaluation and treatment at the Roban health clinic.
