LUBOK ANTU, Feb 12: An elderly man in his 70s and a foreign national in his late 20s were arrested by police on Wednesday (Feb 11) for suspected involvement in migrant smuggling along Jalan Batu Kaya here.
In a TVS news, Lubok Antu District Police chief DSP Pricha Azin said the arrests were made following intelligence-led operations by the IPD Lubok Antu Task Force in areas identified as high-risk routes along the Malaysia–Indonesia border.
“The suspects were apprehended inside a vehicle under suspicious circumstances, and further checks revealed that the foreign suspect could not produce valid travel documents and is believed to have entered the country illegally,” he said in a statement today.
A urine test on the foreign suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, he added.
During the operation, police seized a Perodua Kancil, a vehicle key, and two mobile phones, with the total estimated value of the items at RM6,500.
Authorities believe these were used to facilitate the illegal movement of migrants across the border.
The case is being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007, Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amendment 2002), and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Pricha emphasised that IPD Lubok Antu will continue its ongoing operations to combat migrant smuggling and immigration offences in border areas.
He also urged the public to report any information related to migrant smuggling to IPD Lubok Antu at 083-584102 to enable swift action. — DayakDaily
