KUCHING, Dec 31: An elderly man declined evacuation after flash floods inundated the premises where he was staying at Lorong 5I, Desa Wira, Batu Kawa early this morning.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department, a distress call was received at 5.08am reporting flash flooding at Kampung Sinar Budi, Jalan Desa Wira.
A team from the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched and arrived at the scene at 5.19am, where evacuation procedures were initiated for affected residents requiring assistance.
During the operation, an elderly man was found trapped in floodwaters with water levels reaching knee height. Firefighters carried out an assessment and prepared to evacuate the victim.
However, the elderly man informed the rescue team that he was not ready to be evacuated at the time. Firefighters then provided safety advice and shared emergency contact numbers, advising him to immediately call for assistance should the situation worsen.
The Fire and Rescue Department said monitoring is ongoing in areas still inundated by floodwaters at the location. Updates will be provided as the situation develops. — DayakDaily
