SIBU, May 6: An 80-year-old man and his six-year-old granddaughter were killed in a tragic road accident after the motorcycle they were on collided with a lorry along Jalan Sibu Jaya–Salim near Sibu Jaya Monday morning (May 5).
According to a TVS news report, the fatal incident occurred around 11am as the grandfather, from Rumah Grace Itun, Sungai Salim, was reportedly on his way home with the young girl after picking her up from school.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the motorcycle exited a junction suddenly, leaving the lorry driver unable to brake in time, resulting in a collision that threw both victims off the motorcycle and trapped them under the lorry.
Both suffered severe injuries and were unconscious at the scene.
Medical personnel who arrived shortly after confirmed that the motorcyclist died on the spot.
The granddaughter, who sustained critical injuries, was rushed to the Emergency Department of Sibu Hospital but was pronounced dead not long after.
Sibu District Police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed the incident and said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
The 49-year-old local lorry driver escaped unharmed and has been detained to assist in the investigation.
The bodies of both victims have been sent to the Sibu Hospital forensic unit for a post-mortem examination. — DayakDaily
