KUCHING, Oct 2: Police have arrested eight men, including a foreign national, and seized methamphetamine worth about RM680 during an anti-drug operation in Permyjaya here on yesterday (Oct 1).
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation, codenamed ‘Ops Tapis’, was carried out by the district police’s Narcotics Crime Investigation Division following a tip-off.
At about 3pm, police raided the back of a shop building behind a convenience store at Jalan Desa Pujut in Permyjaya Tudan and detained a 33-year-old foreign man. Officers also seized a package of suspected methamphetamine weighing about 5 grams.
“The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a prison term of between two and five years and between three and nine strokes of the cane upon conviction,” Farhan said in a statement today, adding that the suspect will be charged in court tomorrow (Oct 3).
In the same raid, seven local men aged between 22 and 48 were also arrested. Four of them are being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of 1.46 grams of methamphetamine, while the other three are being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug use.
Those found guilty under Section 12(2) face imprisonment or a fine, while those convicted under Section 15(1)(a) may face up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine or police supervision.
All suspects have been remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The four suspects investigated under Section 12(2) have been remanded for four days until Oct 6, while the three under Section 15(1)(a) have been remanded for two days until Oct 4.
Police estimated the total street value of the 6.46 grams of seized methamphetamine at about RM680.
Farhan said continuous operations are being carried out to cripple drug distribution networks in the district.
“This success is the result of ongoing intelligence work and public cooperation. The Royal Malaysia Police will not compromise with any party involved in drug trafficking. Possessing, distributing or protecting drug activities is a serious offence under the law,” he stressed.
