Eidelweiss Franzel makes history with Sarawak’s first ever gold medal in Sukma karate

KUCHING, Aug 18: Sarawakian karateka Eidelweiss Franzel Francey Sami has made history by winning the first-ever gold medal in karate for Sarawak since the event was introduced at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2000.

According to a TVS news report, Eidelweiss achieved this milestone in the women’s individual kumite category of 68 kilogrammes (kg) and above.

She thrilled hundreds of Sarawak supporters who packed Dewan Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IBKN) in Miri after defeating her opponent from Terengganu, Mirza Amirah Syuhada, with a score of 8-6.

Meanwhile, the bronze medals were awarded to Aina Batrisya, Arissa Maseira, and Jemima George in the women’s team kata category, and to Ethan Iskandar Mohamat in the men’s individual kumite category of 84 kg and above.

Looking ahead, Sarawak aims to win two more medals tomorrow (Aug 19) in the men’s and women’ s kumite team events. — DayakDaily
