KUCHING, Oct 13: Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development in Sarawak (Ficord) Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom has emphasised the importance of education as a crucial pillar for the future of animal welfare.
Dr Rundi expressed his agreement with the idea that adapting to changes and advocating for best practices in animal welfare is essential.
He noted that the Asia For Animal (AFA) Conference Sarawak 2023 highlighted two ‘Es’ – education and engagement – as significant aspects of these changes.
“By continuing the conversations ignited here, implementing the best practices discussed, and advocating for change, we can create ripples of transformation that will reverberate far beyond these walls,” he stated.
Dr Rundi made these remarks while officiating at the closing of the Asia For Animal (AFA) Conference Sarawak 2023 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
He further emphasised that engagement among governments, organisations, and communities is vital in developing effective policies and regulations to protect animals.
Collaborative efforts are necessary to enforce laws against animal cruelty, ensure proper treatment of animals in various industries, and promote adoption from shelters rather than supporting unethical breeding practices.
Dr Rundi cited Taiwan as an example of a country that excels in community collaboration and understanding the conservation needs of critically endangered species across Southeast Asia.
He highlighted that Sarawak is home to endangered species, such as orangutans, and could learn from Taiwan’s approach.
“As we all leave this conference, let us carry the torch of awareness, empathy, and action into our respective spheres of influence,” he concluded.
The event was attended by Asia for Animals Coalition president Dave Neale, Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) president Datin Dona Drury Wee, and Conference chairperson Gracie Geikie. — DayakDaily
