KUCHING, June 5: Eden-on-the-Park (Eden) and Rumah Seri Kenangan (RSK) Samarahan were the first two elderly care homes to receive Covid-19 vaccinations via the Sarawak’s Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.
State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian said yesterday (June 4) was the first day the outreach programme was offered to the elderly care homes.
“Thank you very much to JKNS (Sarawak State Health Department) and PKB (Divisional Health Office) for this long-awaited outreach programme, bringing the vaccines to the care homes,” he said in a social media post today.
While some may argue that the young and highly mobile groups should get vaccinated first as they are more likely to contract Covid-19 when moving around, he said the elderly groups are the most vulnerable to the virus.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Local Government and Housing, emphasised that the mortality rate due to Covid-19 among senior citizens is higher as compared to youths.
With the vaccinations, he said the elderly would not have to be apart from their family members to reduce the risk of infection anymore.
“(This is) not just vaccination. After two doses and with strict SOPs (standard operating procedure), they no longer need to remain isolated from their families and the outside world,” he added. — DayakDaily
