KUCHING, Nov 5: The Election Commission (EC) will decide on when to call the 12th Sarawak State Election following the dissolution of Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Nov 3, 2021.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg when asked on the election date, said the power to call the State polls lies with the EC which will convene a meeting on the matter soon.

“It is up to the EC. I was informed that the EC will hold a meeting (on the State polls).

“I do not know (when it will be called). That is their duty,” he told reporters at a press conference held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Kuching today.

Abang Johari also said as a matter of procedure, the Sarawak DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar will officially inform the EC on the dissolution of the State DUN.

Sarawak was initially placed under a state of emergency until Feb 2, 2022 due to the threat to public health caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, Yang di-Pertuan Agong has assented to lift the emergency earlier after considering the request from Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud as well as the advice of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, a presentation by the Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Azizan Harun and the views of heads of government agencies.

The ending of Emergency has led to the dissolution of Sarawak DUN on Nov 3, 2021 which paves the way for Sarawak to hold its election within 60 days as the term of current DUN had expired in June 2021. — DayakDaily
