EC: Sarawak has 1,943,074 voters for GE15, increase of 59.14 pct compared to GE14

KUCHING, Oct 29: The Election Commission (EC) has reported that there are 1,943,074 voters in Sarawak.

Caretaker Minister In The Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law), Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the number shows an increase of 59.14 per cent for the 15th General Election (GE15) compared to the 1,220,960 voters recorded during the previous GE14.

From the latest total, 825,791 are voters aged 21 to 39, which is the largest category, while the total number of voters aged 18 to 20 is 129,034.


By gender, 975,618 or 50.21 per cent are male voters, and 967,456 (49.79 per cent) are female voters.

Meanwhile, 25,799 are people with disabilities (OKU), and out of that number, 25,782 are ordinary voters, seven are disabled army members and their spouses, and 10 are disabled police members and their spouses.

Wan Junaidi also informed that the number of early voters recorded a slight reduction of 22,127 compared to 24,545 according to the previous record in GE14.

The overall voter registration also shows that the majority of voters are those under the age of 60, which is 1,539,645, while 355,413 are aged 60 and above.

During polling day, 38,148 officers will be on duty involving 1,943 polling stations, including 55 early voting stations with 4,286 channels.

“Of the 1,943 gazetted polling stations, 74 of them are located in rural areas which do not have access to telecommunications.

“Thus, the EC will be cooperating with telecommunication service providers and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure that all the polling stations get coverage and communication is not affected,” he said in a statement today.

Wan Junaidi further said the EC Sarawak is ready for GE15 and has contingency plans to ensure the smoothness of the voting process with assistance from all enforcement and security agencies in the event of a flood disaster.

Wan Junaidi recently participated in a briefing by EC Sarawak deputy director (Operations) Hamfatullah Syawal Hamdan on the EC’s preparedness for GE15 yesterday. — DayakDaily
