MIRI, March 19: Nine houses were completely destroyed in an early morning fire at Kampung Pasir in Simpang 4 Lutong early this morning, leaving 37 people affected but with no casualties reported.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received an emergency call at 4.06am and immediately dispatched personnel from Lutong station, with assistance from Lopeng and Miri Central stations.
According to the operations report, the blaze involved nine non-permanent houses, each estimated to measure about 30 by 100 square feet. Of these, six were occupied at the time, while three were unoccupied.
Firefighters acted swiftly to contain the blaze, deploying two hose lines spanning 300 feet with four nozzles. Water was sourced from nearby hydrants using a relay pumping system, requiring approximately 600 feet of hose connections between fire engines to ensure a continuous supply.
However, firefighters faced challenges due to the densely populated area, which hampered access and manoeuvrability of fire engines. In addition, water sources such as hydrants and open water points were located some distance away and only accessible from the main road.
The fire was successfully brought under control, and operations concluded at 7.45am after crews ensured there were no remaining hotspots that could trigger a reignition.
Despite the scale of the fire, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The cause of the fire and the total losses incurred are still under investigation. — DayakDaily
