KUCHING, Oct 25: About 200 people are expected to benefit from free health screenings under the Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) fourth health screening programme at Wisma Koperasi Kemajuan Henghua Kuching Berhad along Jalan Sungai Apong Baru today.

Held in collaboration with Borneo Medical Centre (BMC), the programme offers blood tests covering 38 health indicators to help participants better understand their health and detect potential medical problems early.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the initiative aims to improve community access to healthcare, particularly for low-income families, senior citizens, and residents who face difficulties travelling to hospitals or clinics.

He noted that many people seek medical attention only when they start feeling unwell, despite the benefits of regular health screenings in identifying potential health problems early.

“Prevention is better. We want to ensure our citizens remain healthy as Kuching moves towards achieving its Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 and its smart city goals,” he told reporters at the venue here today.

Wee said the initiative initially catered to MBKS staff before expanding to include individuals working at local markets and members of other communities.

The latest programme was open not only to cooperative members but also to residents living in the surrounding neighbourhood.

He thanked BMC and the other sponsors for supporting the initiative, which made the health screenings free of charge.

Wee said participants would receive their test results and could consult their respective doctors for further advice if any health concerns were identified. Those requiring more detailed examinations could also opt for additional tests at their own expense.

He added that MBKS would continue organising health screening programmes in different communities to make preventive healthcare more accessible.

Wee also urged community leaders to identify urban poor families and residents who might require additional assistance.

He thanked Koperasi Kemajuan Henghua Kuching Berhad for providing its premises for the programme, emphasising that cooperation between the local council, private sector, and community was essential to building a healthier city.

Also present were Koperasi Kemajuan Henghua Kuching Berhad chairman Lau Thian Kin, political secretary to the Sarawak Premier’s Department Kho Teck Wan, and several MBKS councillors. — DayakDaily
