PAKAN, Dec 22: The uniqueness of Sarikei Division’s fruit season could be leveraged to position the area as a sought-after agro-tourism destination, where visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while sampling a wide variety of fresh, locally grown fruits such as durian, pakon, and dabai.

In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom emphasised that the seasonal bounty presents a significant opportunity for the division, which is recognised as a major food-producing area.

He believes that tapping into this potential could transform Sarikei into a thriving agro-tourism hub, benefiting both the local economy and the community.

“Empowering the agricultural sector, particularly fruit cultivation, can open up new avenues for economic growth, job creation, and business opportunities for local residents.

“These ideas need to be explored and developed further to make them a reality, as the local fruit season is something that fruit lovers eagerly anticipate each year,” he said when officiating the Gotong-Royong Perdana and Santai Makan Durian programme at the Pakan District Office on Saturday (Dec 21).

The Pakan District is particularly known for its high-demand fruit varieties, including durian, durian isu, pakon or pakan fruit, and dabai fruit, which draw visitors from far and wide.

The event was also attended by Sarikei Division Resident Datu Micheal Ronnie Langgong, Sarikei Division deputy resident Badjuri Bidin, Pakan District officer Mohd Irwan Abdullah @ William Manggoi, and community leaders. — DayakDaily
