The incident, reported at 6.27pm, prompted an immediate response from firefighters from the Petra Jaya Station together with the Hazmat team from the Tabuan Jaya Station.

Upon arrival and after conducting an initial assessment, the team discovered 17 metal drums and five jerry cans, each with a capacity of 20 litres, at the site. The containers were marked with the placard “SW-305”, believed to indicate chemical waste.

The operation commanders directed the Hazmat personnel to don full bunker gear and use four gas metres along with litmus paper to detect any hazardous substances.

Bomba Sarawak confirmed that no hazardous gas readings were detected from the instruments used during inspection. Further checks revealed that the substance inside the containers was lubricant.

The team proceeded to stabilise all containers and set up safety barriers before handing over the site to the police for further investigation.

Once the area was confirmed safe, the operation was stood down and the responding units returned to their respective stations. — DayakDaily
