KUCHING, April 5: The Chamber of Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs (DUBS) Miri hopes the Sarawak government can consider building a convention centre in Miri.
DUBS Miri chairman Mohammad Hafidz Rohani said various large scale events could be held in Miri if it had its own international-standard convention centre.
“This would also attract large companies or organisations to invest here,” he said in a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
The report also stated that despite obtaining city status, Miri is still seen as being far behind compared to other cities such as Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Seremban, and Johor Bahru.
The establishment of its own convention centre could also have a ripple effect that would benefit the local economy and tourism industry.
Meanwhile, another member of DUBS Miri, Matassan Rohani, also agreed that Miri should have its own convention centre.
“We are transitioning into the endemic phase, and with the reopening of the country’s border, the tourism industry here will recover from the effects of Covid-19,” said Matassan.
Meanwhile, another DUBS Miri member, Mariana Murib, who is involved with the tourism industry here, said that with the announcement by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg that Sarawak is planning to establish its own boutique airline, it would be easier for tourists to visit the State, particularly Miri. — DayakDaily
