Drug-positive suspect busted for RM1,300 theft of temple ceremonial items in Sundar

KUCHING, Jan 28: Police have recovered equipment stolen from a house of worship in Sundar, Lawas, following the arrest of a 43-year-old man linked to the theft, which caused losses estimated at about RM1,300.

According to a TVS news report, Lawas District Police Chief DSP Liong Tindan said police received a report at 8.57pm on Sunday (Jan 25) regarding the theft at the religious premises in Sundar.

Acting on information, police launched an operation to track down the suspect and arrested him at 4.29pm on Monday (Jan 26) at a house in the Sundar area.

“Following the arrest, police managed to recover the equipment reported missing. Checks on the suspect’s criminal record revealed three prior offences related to drugs and crime,” he said.

DSP Liong added that urine tests conducted on the suspect found him positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952.

In a separate development, he said a 21-year-old male labourer was arrested during Op Tapis Khas conducted at 2.50pm on Monday (Jan 26) in Lawas town, with police seizing 0.30 gram of syabu.

“Urine tests found the suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, and checks showed that he has no prior criminal record,” he said.

Meanwhile, in another operation, police detained three male labourers aged 31, 34 and 51 in separate raids along Jalan Lawas Damit and Jalan Punang, Lawas, for suspected involvement in drug abuse activities.

DSP Liong said further inspections did not uncover any prohibited items or drugs. However, urine tests showed all three suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, with one suspect found to have two prior drug-related offences.

The drug cases are being investigated under Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — DayakDaily
