KUCHING, Aug 28: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has revealed that a proposal to review the allowances of local councillors will soon be presented to Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the earth-breaking ceremony for Padawan Municipal Council’s (MPP) new headquarters at Mile 12, Jalan Kuching-Serian today, Dr Sim acknowledged the hard work of councillors, describing them as “working 24-7” to serve the community.

“All the councillors nowadays, they work very hard. And they have been asking whether we can re-look at their allowance or not,” he said.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said the matter was discussed during the recent ‘Special Committee Meeting on the Management of KMKK (Community Leaders and Village Chiefs) and JKKK (Village Development and Security Committee) Affairs Sarawak No 1/2025’ chaired by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, where a consensus was reached.

“Hence, I will present to the Premier about the councillor allowance so that both KMKK and councillors will go together,” he added.

Previous reports indicate that Sarawak’s local government councillors have received a fixed monthly allowance of RM300 since 2019, in addition to a meeting allowance of RM100 per session, capped at RM700 per month. – DayakDaily
