KUCHING, Aug 19: Sarawakians have to realise that enforcement, policies and vaccines can only do so much as it is up to everyone to play their roles in the fight against Covid-19, says Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor stressed that the Covid-19 Delta variant will not be the last Covid-19 threat during the pandemic.

At the same time, it is beyond realistic for Sarawak to undergo another lockdown or curfew where it can be totally isolated from the outside until Covid-19 is no longer around.

“There will always be those recalcitrant (individuals) who are naive at best, or intentionally pretend not to understand, who claim that their business sectors has no Covid-19 infection or clusters.

“And those who always ‘forget’ about (wearing) face masks or ‘interpret’ social gatherings in their own ways despite overwhelming scientific evidence that the Delta variant is with us not only in Kuching but in the rest of Sarawak.

“In our war with Covid-19, it’s up to each and every one of us because the enforcement, the policy, the vaccines can only do so much,” he said in a social media post yesterday (Aug 18).

Meanwhile, Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Local Government and Housing, said Sarawak is fortunate to have the capacity and resources to scale up the Covid-19 vaccination in June, but not so when Delta variant hit in July before the 14-day immunity boosting period after second doses were administered.

Nonetheless, he expressed appreciation to the Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) director Prof Dr David Perera and his team in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) for their tireless perseverance towards genomics study especially on Covid-19. — DayakDaily
