KUCHING, May 17: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has announced that he would be the new Education Minister while Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be in charge of welfare and women’s affairs.
Dr Mahathir told a press conference today after a Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting that 13 ministers will be sworn in on Monday (May 21) if the Istana agreed to the proposal, reported The Star.
As for the remaining core ministerial positions, he said they would be divided equally among the four component parties.
“This doesn’t represent the strength of each party. Some will get more, some less later. At this stage, we are not taking into account the strength of the parties, but we will do so when we appoint the other ministers so that we have a size of 25,” Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying.
He hoped to be able to announce the full list of ministerial appointments tomorrow (May 18).
On his own appointment as Education Minister, he explained that he needed to do it because many are still uneducated and education needed his attention.
Holding that view that Malaysia is behind in terms of teaching methodology, he said Malaysia would “devise new ways of teaching”. — DayakDaily
