Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab appointed Malaysia’s new Health Director-General

KUCHING, May 29: Kuala Lumpur Hospital’s head of Emergency and Trauma Department, Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab, has been appointed as Malaysia’s new Director-General of Health, effective today.

According to a press statement, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, had consented to the appointment.

“I am confident of his competence and credibility to drive the healthcare reform agenda that is currently being implemented, which aims to deliver efficient, friendly, and professional health services to ensure benefits to the people and the country,” Shamsul Azri said.

Dr Mahathar bin Abd Wahab, 56 years old, began his career in the healthcare sector through his appointment as a medical officer at the Ministry of Health Malaysia on October 1, 1996.

He holds a Bachelor of Medical Science (University of St Andrews, Scotland), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (University of Manchester, UK) and Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine), Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Dr Mahathar replaces Datuk Dr Radzi Abu Hassan after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 earlier this month. – DayakDaily
