KUCHING, April 11: Datu Dr Lulie Melling has been re-elected as the president of Malaysian Peat Society (MPS) for the 2023-2025 term.
According to a media release issued yesterday, the election was held during MPS’s 13th annual general meeting (AGM) at Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (Tropi) on April 8.
Dr Lulie will be supported by vice president David Chia Kim Kong, secretary-general John Ko Wai Seng, assistant secretary-general Dr Faustina Elfrida Sangok, treasurer-general Dr Wong Guan Xhuan and assistant treasurer-general Jee Hon Chong.
The ordinary committee members elected during the meeting were Frederick Haili Teck, Sebestian Kalang William and Yazid Imran Muhammad Faizul.
In her report, Dr Lulie disclosed that MPS had successfully organised AsiaFlux Conference 2022 at Tropi from Sept 20 to 22, followed by the Tropical Peat Swamp Excursion at Maludam National Park on Sept 23 last year.
The AsiaFlux Conference was jointly organized by MPS, Tropi and the AsiaFlux steering committee with the collaboration of National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan; Hokkaido University in Japan; the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB); Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM); and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) and supported by Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB).
This year, she informed the committee, MPS members will attend the International Soil Science Conference (SOILS2023) organised by the Malaysia Society of Soil Science from May 8 to 11, to present research findings in relation to the research and development (R&D) of tropical peatland.
Additionally, MPS is making arrangements to take part in the coming Quebec RE3 Conference 2023 in Canada from June 11 to 15.
Dr Lulie also revealed that MPS intends to take part in the coming 17th International Peat Congress 2024 in Taizhou, China from August 5 to 11 next year.
She reminded the committee that MPS’s prime objective in addition to promoting peat research is to sponsor scientific research students who deserve support to help develop Malaysia’s academic pool. — DayakDaily
