KUCHING, Feb 15: Sarawak Health Department confirms there are Covid-19 cases detected in two nursing homes in Sibu.

“Yes, we actually have cases detected in two nursing homes. We have done the necessary.  Those positive we have admitted them. Those in contact, we quarantine them.  We also monitor those who are still there (in the nursing home) closely,” said Sarawak Health director Dr Chin Zin Hing in a press conference to update Covid-19 today.

He said the health authorities are presently carrying out Covid-19 test on the elderly residing in the two nursing homes.

“We will announce the cluster tomorrow because we need to check with the ministry the name to be given to the cluster,” said Dr Chin.

On the source of infection, Dr Chin said Covid-19 infections are already within Sibu community. He was thus uncertain if the cases in the nursing homes are linked to the Pasai Cluster as the health authorities are still investigating.

A total of 31 senior citizens from two elderly care centres in Sibu had been transferred to the Sibu Hospital for quarantine this morning.

The action according to Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail was taken following the death of an elderly in one of the two nursing homes.

Aidi said the victim — a 73-year-old man was confirmed positive for Covid-19 yesterday and died this morning at the nursing home he was residing at.

The elderly in this nursing home went through a swab test on Feb 13 and were found to be positive for Covid-19 on Feb 14.

According to Aidi, following the death of the elderly, 18 residents from the nursing home were taken to the hospital while another 13 more senior citizens from another care centre were also transferred to the Sibu Hospital. — DayakDaily
