Dr Abdul Rahman: 2 projects to increase production of treated water in Lawas

KUCHING, May 20: Two projects have been implemented under ‘Projek Rakyat’ to increase the production capacity of treated water in Lawas, said Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is Utility and Telecommunication Deputy Minister II, said the projects are namely the upgrading works of the existing Trusan Regional Water Treatment Plant from 20 million liters per day (MLD) to 40 MLD, including the repair works on the Gelugus Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 5 MLD.

“It is expected to be completed by the end of this year,” said Dr Abdul Rahman.

He was replaying to a question from Ba’Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

He added as a long-term solution measure, two additional projects namely; New Lawas Water Treatment Plant (20MLD) and New Trusan Water Treatment Plant (50MLD) have been submitted under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP) for implementation.

He also said that the Sarawak Alternative Rural Water Supply (Sawas) project in Banting, Lingga, is still in the process of tender evaluation and project implementation is expected to begin this year.

“An estimated 268 households will benefit from the Sawas project,” he said. — DayakDaily
