KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19: The federal government has allocated RM331 million to upgrade and maintain logging roads in Sarawak’s rural areas, says Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, according to a Bernama TV news report.
The Minister of Rural and Regional Development added that maintenance works will be carried out immediately, with the completion period to fall before Christmas this year so that people could return to their villages for the festive season.
“We will try to do our best, but the problem of the monsoon season will slightly delay it,” he said when wrapping up the debate on the motion for the 12th Malaysia Plan Midterm Review at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday (Sept 18).
Meanwhile, he expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak government, especially the Public Works Department (JKR) and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, for their assistance.
Previously, the government was adamant that the project must be completed before December 25 for the convenience of people to return to their hometowns to celebrate Christmas, in addition to avoiding the monsoon season. — DayakDaily
