KUCHING, March 8: Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof has expressed deep concern that the recent controversy surrounding radio DJs involved in a video mocking a religious festival could escalate into a racial riot if not handled with care.
In a doorstep interview, Fadillah responded to the growing tension on social media following the incident.
While acknowledging that the matter is under police investigation, he emphasised the potential dangers of continuing to stir sensitive issues.
Fadillah cautioned that remarks or behaviour that touch on religious or cultural differences could have serious consequences, warning that “misunderstandings and conflicts could lead to racial riots or even worse, clashes of faith.”
“We must avoid such situations because the harmony we have built could be destroyed.
“If we allow division to fester, it could undermine the unity we have worked so hard to foster, and we could face the breakdown of social peace,” he said after officiating a bubur pedas distribution programme in Satok today.
Fadillah, who is also the Petra Jaya MP, reiterated the importance of respect and understanding, urging the public to be mindful of the impact their words and actions may have on the social fabric.
He praised the strong interfaith and interethnic tolerance in Sarawak and Sabah but reminded everyone that such unity must be carefully preserved.
Fadillah also called on all sectors of society, from politicians to individuals and associations, to prioritise unity and peace.
“Now is the time to focus on how we can strengthen unity across our communities. This is crucial in building a more prosperous and peaceful nation,” he added. – DayakDaily
