KUCHING, Oct 10: Sarawak youths must look beyond traditional career paths and embrace emerging technologies, with critical fields offering better job prospects and entrepreneurial opportunities as the State prepares for its future economic needs.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said fields such as engineering, science, psychology, aerospace, artificial intelligence (AI) and renewable energy would be increasingly important in meeting Sarawak’s future workforce needs.

“The Sarawak government is providing free education, although not for all subjects. It is limited to critical fields.

“These are fields that the State government believes will provide students with opportunities and avenues to secure employment or venture into business after completing their studies,” he said during a special dialogue session with Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali at the Motivasi Sedia Menghadapi Masa Depan Programme at Taman Sukma Multipurpose Hall today.

Fadillah urged students to excel academically and pursue fields that would meet Sarawak’s future demand for skilled workers.

“Today, many people pursue various courses but cannot find jobs after graduating because their qualifications are no longer in demand,” he said.

He warned that technological advances could make some existing jobs obsolete, underscoring the need for youths to adapt to changing industry demands.

Fadillah also encouraged youths to turn innovative ideas into businesses by leveraging technology and creativity.

“Today, the world has changed. Those who are intelligent, creative and innovative are the ones who can create wealth,” he said.

He stressed that successful entrepreneurship required practical solutions, market knowledge and the ability to secure funding to grow viable business ideas.

“You must understand the realities of the problems people face. You must then identify how you can solve those problems through a system, a method or any other solution you can offer,” he said. — DayakDaily
