KUCHING, Jan 31: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the Sarawak election could happen anytime but stressed there is no official announcement that it will take place this year, following remarks by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“It was not stated that it would definitely be this year. What was meant is that an election can take place at any time, including this year,” he told reporters after a Chinese New Year contribution ceremony for senior citizens and persons with disabilities at the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Matang Sungai Tengah Multipurpose Hall today.

He said the current Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) term runs until February next year, allowing a State election to be declared anytime before then.

Fadillah emphasised that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready for an election but insisted that the coalition’s priority remains governance and public service.

“GPS does not work for elections. We work for the people all the time. Elections are merely a process to return power to the people to evaluate our performance.

“Whether there is an election or not, our work remains the same every year. Even this kind of presentation ceremony is held every year; we do not wait for elections,” he added.

Fadillah also declined to answer a question on contesting in the State election.

“That is hypothetical, so I will not answer it,” he stated. — DayakDaily
