KUCHING, March 18: Sarawak’s rights under the Territorial Sea Act 2012 [Act 750] of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) must be restored, says Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof.
Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) reported that Fadillah, who also serves as the federal Minister of Plantation and Commodities (KPK), emphasised the importance of returning the rights as soon as possible.
“Sarawak indeed demands it because it is based on laws that exist in Sarawak, whereby Sarawak formerly had its own maritime borders, continental shelves, and many more, until the law was introduced at the federal level, where according to Sarawak, it does not rely on State references because it is under the constitution.
“Any federal legislation that wishes to amend laws in Sarawak itself must obtain approval at the State level, especially in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN).
“That is the argument at the Sarawak level that we need to carefully examine, and I believe from a personal standpoint, I would support it,” he was quoted as saying in the news report.
“However, due to technicalities in terms of legislation, it is certainly not easy for us to resolve,” Fadillah added.
The minister told reporters this after a ceremony to distribute bubur lambuk and food baskets organised by Sidma College and P194 Petra Jaya yesterday afternoon (March 17) at the Unity Hall of Kampung Paroh here.
During the ceremony, Fadillah handed out food baskets to 110 recipients and bubur lambuk to the local residents. — DayakDaily
