KUCHING, Nov 26: Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Seri Tiong King Sing has clarified that his visit to Tawau, Sabah, was strictly in his capacity as a minister and not politically motivated.
In a video interview posted on his Facebook page, he pointed out that he was in Tawau on the invitation of a non-government organisation (NGO) in the capacity of his position as Minster of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
“I want to tell people, especially for Sarawakian, I’m here (in Tawau) to carry out my duty as a Minister
“We have visited many states, like last week, we went to Perak, and Genting. I’m in Tawau because I was invited by a NGO. This NGO organises a lot of events, including the one in Tawau. As a leader, when I’m invited, it’s my responsibility to serve,” he said.
“Some people try to twist things like saying I’m against GPS’ decision. But I want to emphasise that I’m only carrying out my duty as a Minister of Tourism. Enough is enough, don’t twist the facts.
“I will ensure Visit Malaysia 2026 is a success,” he stressed.
In an earlier post, during his visit, Tiong attended a meeting with tourism industry players in Tawau, including representatives from associations, entrepreneurs, tour guides, airlines, and airports. The meeting provided him with firsthand insights into the challenges facing the local tourism sector, as well as opportunities to strengthen it.
Among the issues raised were infrastructure issues, service standards and quality, safety, product development, workforce training and destination image which are common priorities.
“I emphasise MOTAC’s commitment to continue to strengthen Tawau’s tourism product, including the great potential in ecotourism and wildlife. We will work closely with the state government, PBT and the industry to improve facilities and tourist experiences.
“Efforts to improve hospitality standards, tour guide training and legal compliance will be strengthened, in addition to bringing strategic issues such as destination security, airport operations and central government support for further action,” he said. – DayakDaily
