KUCHING, Apr 4: Employees instructed to work from home (WFH) must not treat the arrangement as an opportunity for holidays or family outings, as such behaviour reflects a lack of discipline and undermines workplace responsibilities, said Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Speaking to reporters at Kota Samarahan Hari Raya open house today, he acknowledged that WFH can help reduce fuel consumption and lower costs, but stressed that workers must remain productive and disciplined.
“When employees are instructed to work from home, they should not take that time to bring their families on holiday or go on picnics. That is wrong. It shows a lack of self-discipline. Working from home does not mean taking a break; employees must continue to be productive,” he said.
He also pointed out that industries such as restaurants and other services that require physical presence must continue operating on-site.
Abdul Karim linked the WFH initiative to the global surge in oil prices following the Middle East crisis, which has affected operating costs across industries. Despite this, he said Sarawak remains relatively insulated, with diesel prices still lower than in neighbouring countries, and expressed hope that the state’s diesel subsidy can be maintained.
“Many industries in Sarawak continue to benefit from other forms of support, including public bus operators,” he added, emphasising the reliance of longhouse communities and four-wheel-drive users, such as Land Cruisers and Hilux vehicles, on diesel for daily needs.
The remarks come ahead of the federal government’s announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that a WFH policy will be implemented from 15 April. The measure will apply to ministries, agencies, statutory bodies, and government-linked companies, with the stated aim of conserving fuel and ensuring a sustainable energy supply. Further details are expected to be released in due course. — DayakDaily
