KUCHING, Sept 4: DAP Socialist Youth Sarawak (DAPSY) should take the fight against illegal moneylending to Parliament and Cabinet where enforcement decisions and resources lie, instead of shifting the blame to local councils who are already doing the heavy lifting on the ground, asserted Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

Wee stressed that MBKS has been working tirelessly alongside the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to curb the issue, dismissing claims of inaction by DAPSY Sarawak secretary George Lam as “baseless, misleading, and malicious”.

“Let me state this clearly: MBKS does not operate for show.

“We do not chase headlines. We work quietly, diligently, and without fanfare, always with the safety and interest of the people in mind.

“To accuse us of inaction is not only misleading but malicious,” Wee said in a statement today.

He pointed out that MBKS had, just last month, engaged directly with the Kuching District Police Chief and Bukit Aman’s Special Branch to strengthen enforcement coordination.

At the same time, he disclosed that MBKS has, over the years, compiled telephone numbers from illegal moneylending advertisements removed from public spaces and handed them over to the police and MCMC for further action.

“George Lam could have verified facts and matters before making such baseless accusations.

“Instead, he took a Nelsonian approach and issued public statements without reasonable diligence, turning a matter of public safety into a political spectacle,” Wee rebuked.

The Mayor also reminded that the police force and MCMC are federal agencies, with the MPs for Kuching and Stampin as well as the Deputy Minister in charge of MCMC all from DAP.

“These are enforcement issues under federal jurisdiction, and the fact that DAPSY now admits this only proves they have known all along but chose to mislead the public for political mileage,” he stressed.

Wee further defended MBKS enforcement staff, highlighting that they have been working day and night removing thousands of illegal banners and posters under challenging conditions.

“To belittle their service is to undermine the good work by dedicated people,” he said.

Underscoring the need for constructive cooperation, Wee called on DAPSY to rise above political point-scoring.

“Leadership is not about pointing fingers to gain political publicity. It is about standing up, doing the hard work, and owning responsibility.

“At MBKS, we do just that. We love this city, and we are here to protect it, with or without media praise.

“What Sarawak needs now is unity of purpose, not empty noise. Work with us, or at the very least, don’t undermine those who are already doing the work,” he said. — DayakDaily
