KUCHING, March 5: Please don’t overfeed the fish at Friendship Park (‘Taman Sahabat’) or feed them with expired bread, urged Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

He said the fish could die from overeating or consuming rotten food from visitors to the park.

Throwing food that has gone bad into the pond will affect the fish when eaten and the quality of water, he said.

“Last week, I’m sure a lot of people know that many fish in the pond at Taman Sahabat died. However, when removed from the pond, the dead fish had bulging stomachs filled with food.

“They were not pregnant. Instead, they overate,” said Wee in his weekly Facebook live session today.

He also warned citizens against releasing pet fish into the pond to avoid overcrowding, depriving the fish of oxygen.

“When there are too many fish, there won’t be enough oxygen in the water.

“So, now we (MBKS) are also trying to think of ways on how to improve the quality of living of the fish there. Several factors had caused the (dead fish) incident, but most importantly, don’t give the fish too much food,” he said.

Wee added that there would be future discussions of possibly restricting fish feeding at the park or limiting the feeding time to certain times of the day to protect the ecosystem. — DayakDaily
